Is there some force, some being not wholly unlike ourselves, yet unimaginably beyond ourselves that does everything from listening to us, to making us do things, to causing the winds to howl and cats to purr, to creating and maintaining the entire universe?

How are we to know?  Our whole lives we hear people pontificating to us about this, that and every other thing.  Our priests of whatever faith warn us of the destruction that will befall us if we believe another faith, or, worse, if we believe no faith at all. One religion banishes to Hell which another tells us does not exist.  Others spout high-souding gobbledegook about the wonders of the universe without really saying much of anything.
