Myst III (Exile) – Voltaic

Arrive at Tower Ruin, containing Book to J’Nanin, view of some power lines, access to rest of Island

Straight, past Cave entrance -> Next fork

Continue Straight -> down ladder, across bridge to CONTROL: pastedGraphic.pdf  pastedGraphic_1.pdf pastedGraphic_2.pdf

-> down stairs to BROKEN BRIDGE

-> up single sided ladder -> into chamber -> along pipe -> airplane fuselage chamber

 -> can go down into RED CHAMBER:

–> DOOR ->

RED Path  –> somehow to red hot CAULDRON w/ control that won’t turn while stuff is in it -> manipulating it from outside turns steam on when return to top of single-sided ladder

BLUE Path -> to Blue Chamber (below)

–>  Manipulable Red Knob with view into MACHINE ROOM — moving knob moves something inside and then can’t be re-set; this seems to have turned off the CAULDRON — so now I can enter MACHINE ROOM

-> In MACHINE ROOM is another RED KNOB, this has at least four positions.  After Cauldron boiling and Gear to RIGHT of center, can access thing that turns previously hidden switch that turns something ON (can tell by sound only)  — now returning, see into room and FAN is ON

Right on curving bridge -> elevator (initially INOPERATIVE)

Right into Cave ->   (Red Path is back the way I came)

-> Blue Path

->  Ladder UP -> Another CONTROL WHEEL — Opens FLOOD GATE

->  Chamber toward Water Wheel control:

->  VAULT #1 -> once Hydraulic Life solved -> ELECTRIC POWER –> solved by connecting units in order

->

->  Once DAM is open, Stairway not blocked by water level ->  RED button allowing access to BRONZE HYDRAULIC LIFT MACHINE.

pastedGraphic_3.pdf

once this is UP, VAULT can be opened

   Also this diagram that lights up when areas are powered up:

pastedGraphic_4.pdf

-> Door (Initially does not open; once reached from other side can open from inside)

Objects:

“submarine” door with Red handle Cannot open originally;  I believe I later open it from the other side.
Dam In UP position water passes the water mill
Red Wheel at top of ladder in Cave->Blue tunnel Opens dam.  When open, gives power to Water Mill.
VAULT at Ruin Locked
Water Mill Apparent Power Supplier
VAULT DOOR at end of Blue cave Locked
Bronze Hydraulic Lift Pushes up giant hydraulic lift and then goes back down;  Apparently needs something else to be functional
Elevator Handle just returns to its original position;  Would lift/drop elevator if activated
Handle near red wheels Initially inoperative  — Moves Steam Controls up two more levels;
Larger Red Wheel Turns and returns to original position; Complex, tied to other 4 wheels being correctly set
4 Red Wheels First 3 turn one notch, the fourth will not turn;  Complex interaction;  Solved
Yellow, Blue, Red Dial Indicator;  Moves into YELLOW when turned on cauldron and moved control to move the gear UP
Cauldron room Lifter can be left or right;  appears to have a least 3 levels; on third level up, provides access to KNOB
Cauldron room KNOB Turned once made accessiblepastedGraphic_5.pdf In this position, doesn’t seem I can turn it on from outside the cauldron room;  Looks like this must be set to the left side before I leave the room in order to turn the cauldron on again.  Now steam does come on when I twist the Large Red Wheel.

With the button pushed in the Cauldron room, we can now move up and down the lift near the 4 Red Wheels.  Steam is clearly flowing, though I can’t get the arrow to point to the red dotted line — the apparent goal — nor can I turn on the Large Red Wheel such that it stays put.  I currently have the arrow in the middle of the yellow area.  Now to check out the Elevator and the Bronze Hydraulic Lift that previously didn’t work and see if they are still inoperative.

Elevator: No

Hydraulic Lift: No

OK, closer look at what seems to be the STEAM DISTRIBUTOR.

I assume I’m aiming @ the dashed red line in the BLUE area.

On BOTTOM #4 will not move.  On TOP it is open or closed.

  1 2 3 4 BASE Handle
BOTTOM  STEAM STEAM STEAM Won’t move No steam inoperative
BOTTOM  STEAM STEAM CLOSED Won’t move STEAM UP
BOTTOM  STEAM CLOSED STEAM Won’t move STEAM inoperative
BOTTOM  STEAM CLOSED CLOSED Won’t move STEAM UP
BOTTOM  CLOSED STEAM STEAM Won’t move STEAM inoperative
BOTTOM  CLOSED STEAM CLOSED Won’t move STEAM UP
BOTTOM  CLOSED CLOSED STEAM Won’t move STEAM UP
BOTTOM  CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED Won’t move STEAM UP

MIDDLE STEAM STEAM STEAM STEAM   inoperative
MIDDLE CLOSED STEAM STEAM STEAM   inoperative
MIDDLE CLOSED CLOSED STEAM STEAM
MIDDLE CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED STEAM   UP OK
MIDDLE CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED   UP OK

If I have bottom set to, say, 7:00, and then go up and turn #1 CLOSED on TOP, it goes to 8:00 on top and remains there when I come back down.

TOP LEVEL: STEAM on moves dial one click CLOCKWISE.

MIDDLE LEVEL:  STEAM moves lever  FOUR clicks CLOCKWISE

BOTTOM LEVEL:  STEAM moves lever TEN clicks CLOCKWISE

AFTER SOLVING THIS.  STUCK.  Hint:

pastedGraphic_6.pdf

This enabled me to figure out getting the Water Power-plant Vault opened.

Next puzzle:

moving clockwise from ladder  (using number system decoded in solving Riven);

assume must be solved in order

1 pastedGraphic_7.pdf pastedGraphic_8.pdf
5 pastedGraphic_9.pdf pastedGraphic_10.pdf
4 pastedGraphic_11.pdf pastedGraphic_12.pdf
3 pastedGraphic_13.pdf pastedGraphic_14.pdf
2 pastedGraphic_15.pdf pastedGraphic_16.pdf

solving one throws the others off?  have to do them in the order of the numbers?  numbers the same as on Riven?  Yes.  I solved them in order.  Still didn’t work.  Then solved #1 again and it fired up!
